Insurance in Poland

Citizens of Poland / Doctoral students from the EU or EFTA

A doctoral student who is under 26 years of age should first be reported for health insurance as a family member of an insured person. Up to the age of 26 the obligation to apply for health insurance rests with a doctoral student’s parents or legal guardians.

After the age of 26, a doctoral student who is not subject to health insurance on any other basis should be reported for insurance by the appropriate unit of the doctoral school. It is important to remember that the insurance is done UPON REQUEST. Doctoral students who are 26 years old and are not entitled to health insurance on any other basis should immediately submit an application for health insurance to the appropriate unit of the doctoral school.

European Health Insurance Card

Doctoral students coming from a member state of the European Union or the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) who are covered with health insurance may apply for European Health Insurance Card (EHIC).

More information about the EHIC card on the European Commission website

Non-EU or EFTA doctoral students

Doctoral students from outside the European Union or a member state of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA), who study in Poland and are not entitled to health insurance on any other basis, may take out voluntary insurance, concluding an appropriate agreement with the National Health Fund (NFZ).
